Penguins Make Surprise Move, Land Goalie of the Future in Arturs Silovs

The Pittsburgh Penguins made a surprising trade — but not the one everyone was expecting (Eriksson) or even the one many are quietly waiting on (Crosby). Instead, the Penguins acquired a promising young goaltender from the Vancouver Canucks: Arturs Silovs.

Silovs broke onto the scene in the 2023–24 playoffs and carried that momentum into 2024–25, where he posted a stellar AHL season. He led the Abbotsford Canucks to a Calder Cup championship as playoff MVP, recording a 16–7 record over 24 games with a sparkling 2.01 GAA and .931 save percentage.

For the Penguins, who lack a clear-cut starting netminder, Silovs is an intriguing addition. Tristan Jarry and Joel Blomqvist currently project as the NHL tandem, with Sergei Murashov waiting in the AHL. Jarry, already waived once, appears to be on borrowed time. Both Blomqvist and Silovs need NHL ice time to develop, and this move suggests the team is willing to let the competition play out.

At the moment, Silovs looks like the closest thing to a starter in Pittsburgh, but the crease remains a fluid situation. Expect the Penguins to ride the hot hand as the season unfolds — Silovs could seize the opportunity, though the path won’t be without its challenges.
